Detailed Information

Performance content “Kotobuki-kai” is an annual autumn performance where geisha and maiko who carry on the tradition of the entertainment district Kamishichiken show off the results of their daily training in their craft.

We have a lineup of programs that you can enjoy at your leisure, from innocent dance performances by young dancers to expressive performances by experienced performers.

The opening act begins with the lively “Ise Sangu Shrine,” a light and airy dance that interweaves scenes and people on the way to Ise Shrine, which was popular among the common people during the Edo period.

Next was “Suisen Tanzen,” which brought to the fore the modern Tanzen-furi style and compared the beautiful appearance of Irowakashu to daffodil flowers. The atmosphere changes dramatically, and the maikos play in a fantasy world in “Origami”, and they reminisce about their childhood games.

At the end, the anguish hidden behind the glamor of the courtesans becomes frantic and transforms into a lion, “Makura-shishi,” which concludes with the heroic hair swing.

We have arranged a wide range of songs, from classic songs to new songs from the Showa era. We look forward to seeing you.

Remarks
Organizations Overview Kami Shichiken, the oldest Kagai in Kyoto, is said to have originated in 1444, when a part of the Kitano Tenmangu Shrine was destroyed by fire, and seven teahouses were built in front of the shrine using leftover materials when the shrine was rebuilt. Later, when Toyotomi Hideyoshi held the Kitano Grand Tea Ceremony in 1587, this teahouses area was used as a rest area. Hideyoshi was so pleased with the dumplings offered by the teahouses that he granted the teahouses the privilege of selling dumplings and the right to operate teahouses in the whole Kyoto area. This is said to be the beginning of Ochaya(teahouses) in Japan. The emblem of Kamishichiken, "five dumplings," is derived from this famous Mitarashi dumpling.
